Cuban Olympic fiasco

Taekwondo’s turbulent history followed it into the Olympic arena at Beijing this year. The popular martial art has been dogged by controversy and scandal virtually since its inception. Instead of restoring honour and dignity to the sport as was hoped, this year’s Olympic Games merely added more fuel to the fire. During a day which was beset by confusion and which saw the very first reversal of a match result, Cuban Taekwondo athlete, Angel Matos took matters into his own hands and kicked a referee in the face after he was disqualified for taking too much injury time.

Matos was winning in the second round of the men’s over-80kg bronze medal match when a powerful kick from his opponent, Kazakhstan’s Arman Chilmanov, landed him on the mat. Fighters are allowed a one-minute injury time out, so when Matos’ treatment went beyond the allotted time, he was disqualified by Swedish referee Chakir Chelbat.

Matos vehemently disagreed with the decision. He questioned the call, then a pushed a judge before turning on Chelbat and splitting his lip with a kick to the face. Chelbat required stitches but both Matos and his coach, Leudis Gonzalez are completely unapologetic about the affair. Gonzalez even said that Chelbat himself was to blame for being too strict. He also alleged that the Kazakhs offered him money in an attempt to rig the match.

The World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) has strongly condemned Matos’ actions and wasted no time in ordering a lifelong ban on both Matos and Gonzalez in all WTF sanctioned competitions. Yang Jin-suk, secretary general of the WTF, said that the incident was “an insult to the Olympic vision, to the spirit of Taekwondo and to mankind. When the ban was announced, it was said to be effective immediately, but Yang has since said that due process would have to be followed before the ban becomes effective.

Matos, who won a gold medal at the Sydney Games and came 11th in Athens, has been defended by outspoken Cuban ex-president, Fidel Castro. Castro said that Matos was “rightfully indignant” and “couldn’t contain himself” after his unfair disqualification. Castro has expressed Cuba’s total solidarity for Matos and his coach. Castro also hinted that Cuban sports were going to experience big changes as they prepared for the upcoming 2012 Games in London. When speaking of the London Games, Castro warned fellow Cubans that “There will be European chauvinism, judge corruption, buying of brains and brawn and a strong does of racism”.
